Varsity Lakes Builder Wins National Industry Award
A Varsity Lakes builder has been honoured as one of Australia’s leading builders in the prestigious Delfin Lend Lease 2004 Grand Masters Awards announced in Brisbane on Friday, 15 October.

Sanctuary 28 Projects won one of only four national awards, the hotly contested Premier Spec Home award for its entry “Tamarama” at Varsity Lakes.

Builders working in the rapidly expanding community won six out of the 13 South East Queensland regional awards which are open to builders in Delfin Lend Lease projects including Springfield Lakes, Forest Lake and Varsity Lakes.

The Varsity Lakes regional winners are:
Sanctuary 28 Projects, Premier Spec Home
Silvergrove Investments, Premier Commercial Property
Don Gray Building P/L, Premier Integrated Home
Limestone Creations, Best Traditional Spec Home Under $250,000
Sanctuary 28 Projects, Best Traditional Spec Home Over $250,000
Santa Monica Developments, Best Low Maintenance Spec Home Over $200,000

The annual Grand Masters Awards are held in different regions across Australia to recognise and reward excellence in building standards in the previous 12 months. The awards are open to some 200 builders in more than 20 Delfin Lend Lease projects across Australia.

Varsity Lakes Project Director Carl Bruhn said he extended special congratulations to the winning builders, but wanted to thank all of Varsity Lakes’ builders for their tremendous work in the past 12 months.

“Varsity Lakes is emerging as one of the most innovative developments in the region with creative and effective design delivering a vibrant and dynamic environment,” said Mr Bruhn.

“Since it began in late 1999 Varsity Lakes has proceeded to grow as an outstanding model of an integrated urban economic community, attracting residents and businesses seeking a smarter, more convenient lifestyle.

“Our builders have responded to this successful mix of residential and business markets, and developed designs for both types of accommodation, designs that have attracted Grand Masters Awards in this year’s program,” he said.

Delfin Lend Lease Chief Operating Officer David Keir said the 2004 Grand Masters Awards attracted the highest number of entries in its 5 year history with 144 builders from four regions – South East Queensland, North Australia, Victoria and South Australia participating.

“The Grand Masters Awards continue to grow in popularity because they encourage builders to raise the benchmark form industry standards and customer satisfaction, addressing important industry issues such as affordability and sustainability,” said Mr Keir.

“Last year we redesigned the awards program to promote value for money home design and sustainable housing principles by introducing new judging criteria directly relating to a home’s affordability and sustainability.

“Under the “Sustainability” criteria judges consider how builders have used environmental, technological and money-saving inclusions when designing and landscaping their homes.

“The 2004 Varsity Lakes national and regional award winners rated well in both criteria.

“Each year our judges are amazed by the flexibility of design, energy efficiency and lifestyle features evident in the Grand Masters Awards entries.

“Not only are such exceptional features driving building industry standards skyward, but ultimately, improvements in home design and workmanship mean a happier customer.

“Delfin Lend Lease strives to create places where people want to live work and play and our builders are vital to the success of our communities. We our proud to recognise their achievements through the Grand Masters Awards,” he said.

One of the national judges of the 2004 Grand Masters Awards, Wayne Gersbach, Executive Director of Planning & Environment, Housing Industry Association said Sanctuary 28 Homes’ “Tamarama” stood apart from the rest by focusing on liveability, not just looks.

“I was particularly impressed with the street appeal of this home which included the innovative use of a variety of materials and a skillion roof,” said Mr Gersbach.

“But I was equally impressed with the liveability of the home. The open plan design and indoor/outdoor connectivity maximised breezes and the large combined lounge, dining and kitchen provided for great entertaining,” he said.

To be eligible for judging homes must have been completed by June 30. The award winners were judged on street appeal, design and liveability, sustainability, marketing, quality finish and workmanship and value for money.

Grands Masters Awards are judged on a regional basis first, with the four most outstanding regional entries, the Premier Award winners, eligible for judging at a national level.

The South East Queensland judges were Jeff Sommerfeld, Property Editor of The Courier-Mail and Rick Wiley, Executive Director – Queensland Housing Industry Association.
