South East Queensland Project Homes Can Be Sustainable and Affordable Says National Developer
In a bid to change the common belief that sustainable housing is expensive, Delfin Lend Lease is rewarding South East Queensland builders who design value for money homes that include environmental initiatives through its annual builder awards program.

Delfin Lend Lease works with over 200 builders in more than 20 projects across Australia and this year its national building awards challenged the home construction industry to address important industry issues such as affordability and sustainability.

South East Queensland builders scooped the awards pool by winning two of the four national 2004 Delfin Lend Lease Grand Master Awards at the awards ceremony in Brisbane on 15 October. Sanctuary 28 Projects won the Premier Spec Home award for its “Tamarama” home at Varsity Lakes and Civic Steel Homes won the Premier Display Home award for its “Eclipse” home at Queensland’s largest display home village at Springfield Lakes.

The annual Grand Masters Awards recognise and reward excellence in building standards in the previous 12 months.

Delfin Lend Lease Chief Operating Officer David Keir said the 2004 Grand Masters Awards attracted the highest number of entries in its 5 year history with 144 builders from four regions – South East Queensland, North Australia, Victoria and South Australia participating.

“The Grand Masters Awards continue to grow in popularity because they encourage builders to raise the benchmark for industry standards and customer satisfaction, addressing important industry issues such as affordability and sustainability,” said Mr Keir.

“Last year we redesigned the awards program to promote value for money home design amongst our partner builders through the introduction of judging criteria directly relating to a home’s affordability.

“It is important to provide homes that cater for all people in the market for a new home, including at the affordable end of the market.

“Also last year Delfin Lend Lease reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable housing principles by introducing a new “Sustainability” judging criteria. Under the “Sustainability” criteria, judges consider how builders have used environmental, technological and money-saving inclusions when designing and landscaping their homes.

“The 2004 South East Queensland national and regional award winners rated strongly in both criteria with particularly positive feedback regarding the homes’ sustainability.

“Delfin Lend Lease strives to create places where people want to live, learn, work and play and our builders are vital to the success of our communities. We our proud to recognise their achievements through the Grand Masters Awards,” he said.

To be eligible for judging homes must have been completed by 30 June 2004. The award winners were judged on street appeal, design and liveability, sustainability, marketing and value for money.

Grands Masters Awards are judged on a regional basis first, with the winners of the Premier Display Home, Premier Spec Home, Premier Integrated Home and Premier Commercial Building, automatically entered into the national awards.

Homes from Springfield Lakes, Forest Lake and Varsity Lakes were eligible for entry into the South East Queensland regional category.

The South East Queensland judges were Jeff Sommerfeld, Property Editor of The Courier-Mail and Rick Wiley Executive Director - Queensland Housing Industry Association.
